What’s Next for You?
A 15-Minute Growth Conversation
Purpose:
This guided conversation is designed to spark reflection and forward momentum. It helps your team members name where they are now, where they want to go, and how you can help them get there.
Time required: 15 minutes
Step 1: Set the Stage (2–3 minutes)
Start by saying:
"I’d love to take a few minutes to think together about your growth. You're doing great work, and I want to make sure we’re thinking ahead about how you can continue to grow.”
Step 2: Ask Three Simple Questions (5–6 minutes)
Give them space to think. You can jot a few notes if it helps.
“What’s something you’re proud of in your work right now?”
“What would you love to learn, try, or grow into next?”
“What kind of support would help you take that next step?”
Step 3: Step 3: Reflect Back & Offer Support (5 minutes)
Share what you see and how you can help:
“One area I think you’re ready to grow in is…”
“I could give you a chance to lead / shadow / explore…”
“Let’s circle back in a few weeks to see how it’s going.”
Why it works:
It puts their growth at the center, shows you’re paying attention, and gives them permission to take a step forward. These small, focused check-ins can build a strong culture of development. Growth happens one conversation at a time.
Tip:
Give your team members these questions in advance so they have time to think before coming in to a conversation with you. While some people are great at these conversations on the fly, others really value the opportunity to plan for these conversations.
