Create ownership

Years ago when working as Director of Enrollment Management, I rolled out an office change I’d been working on for months.

I had mapped out every detail.
I felt really proud of the work.

So when the meeting came to announce the change, I thought everyone would be excited.

Let’s just say excitement wouldn’t be the word to use.

My team went quiet.
Arms crossed.
Eyes down.
People were frustrated.

As I reflected, I realized something important.
I’d invited them into the change far too late.

Here’s the thing:
If you want true buy-in, you have to create ownership before the rollout.

That means:
– Engaging key stakeholders early.
– Listening to concerns before decisions are final.
– Showing how the change connects to shared goals.

Now, I know there are times when it isn't always possible to bring people in early.
But when you do, it makes a world of difference.

Because when people help shape the change, they’re invested in making it work.
