Learning to drive is like learning to lead.

My 16 year old is learning to drive.

And in the car yesterday, I realized it is a lot like developing a new leader.

You’re nervous wondering if they are ready for this new challenge.

You initially focus on all of the things that could go wrong.

You find yourself giving them a lot of guidance and instruction.

You notice they make decisions a little more slowly than you would.

You worry about their every move.

And maybe offer advice a little too often.

But eventually…

You realize they are learning.

They’ve listened.

They’re just developing their own approach to the challenge.

And it’s different than yours.

That's when it hits you—

Their journey is distinct.

They aren't you.

They are coming into their own.

They’re forging their own way with the knowledge and experience they've gained.

It’s a good reminder about growth and development.

It takes time, trust, and a willingness to let go of control as others learn to navigate their path.
