A Self-Reflection Exercise

As a leader, it’s essential to pause and consider how you want to lead in the months ahead.

Clarity comes when you simplify your horizon. A focused 90 day plan creates a steady foundation, helping you move from intention to consistent, aligned action.

A 90 day plan isn’t about doing more. It’s about choosing what matters and building the habits that sustain it. You can return to this exercise any time you feel pulled in too many directions.

Set aside one-hour to help you translate intention into action for whatever season you are stepping into.

Step 1: Identify your three focus areas (15 minutes)

Your 90 day focus areas are the three things that matter most in this season. They represent where your leadership and attention will have the greatest impact.

Review your long-term goals and ask yourself:

  • What deserves my attention in the next 90 days

  • What will move my leadership or organization forward

  • What will create the strongest foundation for the rest of the year

Select no more than three. Your power comes from focus.

Example:

Long term goal: Build a stronger team culture
90 day focus: Create team norms and shared expectations
Why this matters now: Clear expectations create alignment, increase trust, and set the tone for the year.

Step 2: Define your weekly actions (25 minutes)

Weekly actions are the consistent behaviors that move your goals forward. They should be simple, repeatable, and fully within your control. They should be behaviors (e.g., hold a meeting, write a draft), not outcomes.

For each focus area, identify the weekly actions that will build momentum.

Example:

90 day focus: Create team norms and shared expectations
Weekly leading action: Hold one 30 minute conversation with a team member to gather input and assess alignment
How I’ll track it: Weekly calendar review

Step 3: Build Your Accountability System (20 minutes)

A plan only matters if you stay connected to it. This step helps you create the rhythm that supports your goals.

  1. Schedule a weekly self check in.
Block 10 minutes on your calendar to review your progress.

  2. Use a simple reflection structure.
    Each week, ask yourself:

    1. Did I complete my leading actions

    2. What was the most meaningful win

    3. What could get in the way next week

  3. Optional: Choose an accountability partner.
Identify someone who will help you stay focused and consistent and can help you stay on track. This might be a peer, mentor or coach.

Closing Reflection

Take a moment to step back and look at your 90 day plan. What feels most energizing, and what will require the most intention? Clarity grows when you name both.
