Leaders lean into surprises
I’ve never been a fan of surprises.
As a leader, I always made it clear to my team that my philosophy is “no surprises.”
This fall, life is consistently reminding me that surprises are inevitable.
Some have been small, like the unexpected need to buy a new computer.
Others have been more emotional, like navigating the whirlwind of being a parent to a high school senior.
(Fellow senior parents, I feel you.)
Each moment has pushed me to rethink my approach to surprises.
Because here’s the thing:
Leadership—and life—often throw us off course.
We're challenged to step outside our comfort zones, reflect, and adapt.
And sometimes our best growth happens when we’re navigating the unexpected.
As a leader, how you respond to surprises sets the tone for your teams.
Do you resist the change or lean into it?
Do you react with frustration or with curiosity?
While embracing the unexpected is not my greatest strength, I am trying.
I’ve spent time in self-reflection.
And spent time outside to find clarity and perspective.
Plus I get to enjoy the spectacular fall colors here in New England!
Growth and change often come from the moments we didn’t plan for.
So the next time a surprise comes your way, how can you use it to grow as a leader?
