Mentoring vs. coaching

People often ask me:
What's the difference between mentoring and coaching?

Here's how I think about it.

Mentoring is sharing what you know.
"Here's what worked for me. Here's what I learned. Here's what I'd do."

Coaching is helping someone find what they already know.
"What do you think? What's getting in your way? What would you do if you trusted yourself?"

Both matter.

But real coaching assumes the person in front of you is more capable than they are currently being asked to show.

It's not about having the answers.
It's about creating the conditions for them to find their own.

That's harder.

And it's also what builds leaders.
